What is Liposuction?
Liposuction is a surgical body contouring procedure designed to remove localised fat deposits that are resistant to diet and exercise. It is most commonly performed on the abdomen, flanks, thighs, arms, chest or neck to improve proportion and definition.

Liposuction is not a weight-loss procedure and is best suited to patients who are close to a stable, healthy weight but have areas of persistent adipose tissue. The aim is to reshape and refine contour rather than reduce overall body mass.

At The Oxley, both traditional suction-assisted liposuction and VASER (ultrasound-assisted) techniques are used, depending on anatomical requirements and the level of contour refinement desired.
At The Oxley Clinic, every liposuction procedure is tailored to your individual body shape and aesthetic goals. Our approach focuses on removing excess fat from targeted areas while contouring and reshaping the body for a smoother, more toned appearance. Using precise surgical techniques and personalised treatment planning, we aim to achieve natural-looking, long-lasting results with minimal scarring and careful attention to optimal healing.
How is Liposuction Performed?
Before your liposuction procedure, the surgeon may mark the areas to be treated and take photos for comparison with your results. The exact technique used depends on your goals, the treatment area, and whether you have had previous liposuction.

Suction-assisted liposuction is the most common method. The surgeon injects a solution of saline, pain-relieving medication, and a vessel-constricting medicine into the treatment area. Small incisions are made, and a thin tube is inserted under the skin to suction out fat and fluids.

Vaser liposuction is an advanced type of ultrasound-assisted liposuction. A specialized device delivers ultrasound energy to break down fat cells, making them easier to remove. This technique also allows for more precise body contouring and improved skin shaping compared with traditional liposuction.
Liposuction Risks and Considerations
All surgical procedures carry potential risks. With liposuction, swelling, bruising, temporary numbness and contour irregularity are common in early recovery.

Fluid collection (seroma) or minor asymmetry may occur and occasionally require further treatment. Less commonly, bleeding or infection can develop.

More serious complications are rare but can include fat embolism or injury to deeper structures, particularly in large-volume procedures. Careful patient selection, appropriate surgical limits and structured aftercare are essential to minimise risk.

These considerations will be discussed in detail during consultation to ensure informed decision-making and realistic expectations.
Liposuction Surgery Aftercare & Recovery
Aftercare: A compression garment is usually worn day and night for the first 2–4 weeks to help reduce swelling and support contour. Dressings should be kept clean and dry until your initial review. You will be discharged with appropriate analgesia and mobilisation advice.

Recovery: Swelling, bruising and fluid seepage from the small incision sites are common in the first 1–2 weeks. Light daily activity is encouraged early, but strenuous exercise and heavy lifting should be avoided for approximately 3–4 weeks. Final contour improvement continues as swelling settles over several months.

Wound Care: Incisions are small and typically closed with dissolvable sutures. Once healed, scar therapy such as silicone-based products or taping may be recommended for several months. Scars usually fade progressively over time.
What is liposuction?

Liposuction is a surgical procedure that removes excess fat from specific areas of the body, such as the abdomen, hips, thighs, arms, buttocks, or neck, to improve body contour and shape.

What is Vaser liposuction?

Vaser liposuction is an advanced ultrasound-assisted technique that breaks down fat cells before removal, allowing for more precise body sculpting and smoother skin contours compared to traditional liposuction.

Who is a good candidate for liposuction?

Ideal candidates have localized fat deposits that do not respond to diet or exercise, good skin elasticity, and are in overall good health. Liposuction is not a weight-loss method.

What areas can liposuction treat?

Common treatment areas include the abdomen, arms, thighs, hips, buttocks, back, calves, ankles, and under the chin. In men, it can also reduce excess breast tissue caused by gynecomastia.

How is liposuction performed?

During liposuction, the surgeon makes small incisions and uses a cannula to suction out fat. Vaser liposuction uses ultrasound energy to break down fat for easier removal and improved skin shaping.

What is the recovery time after liposuction?

Most patients can resume light activities within a few days, return to normal daily activities after 2–3 weeks, and avoid strenuous exercise for 4–6 weeks. Full results may take several months to appear.

What are the risks of liposuction?

Risks include bleeding, infection, contour irregularities, fluid buildup (seromas), numbness, fat embolism, and rare complications such as organ injury or lidocaine toxicity. Risk increases with large-volume procedures or multiple areas treated.

How should I care for my body after liposuction?

Wear a compression garment as advised, keep wounds clean, drink plenty of fluids, and follow scar care instructions such as using micropore tape for the first 3 months. Gradually return to normal activities and avoid strenuous exercise until cleared by your surgeon.
