What is Labiaplasty?
Labiaplasty, also known as labia minora reduction, is a surgical procedure that reshapes or reduces the size of the inner and/or outer labia. It is typically performed to address discomfort, irritation, hygiene concerns, or self-consciousness caused by enlarged or stretched labial tissue, which may result from ageing, weight loss, or natural genetics.

The aim of the procedure is to create a more comfortable and balanced appearance by reducing excess tissue so the labia sit more neatly within the outer labia.
At The Oxley Clinic, every labiaplasty procedure is carefully tailored to your individual anatomy and aesthetic goals. Our approach focuses on reducing excess labial tissue while preserving natural shape and symmetry to improve both comfort and appearance. Using precise surgical techniques and personalised treatment planning, we aim to achieve natural-looking, long-lasting results with minimal scarring and careful attention to optimal healing.
How is Labiaplasty Surgery Performed?
Labiaplasty is typically performed using one of several surgical techniques, depending on your anatomy and desired outcome.

The trim technique removes excess tissue along the outer edge of the labia minora to improve symmetry and reduce length.

The wedge technique involves removing a small, triangular section of tissue from the central area while preserving the natural labial edge for a more subtle result.

Another option is de-epithelialisation, which removes only the outer layer of skin to reduce size and thickness while maintaining the deeper tissues, nerves, and blood supply. In some cases, a combination of techniques may be used to achieve the most natural-looking outcome.
Labiaplasty Surgery Risks and Considerations
All surgical procedures carry potential risks. With labiaplasty, swelling, bruising and temporary discomfort are common in early recovery.

Minor bleeding, delayed wound healing or small areas of wound separation can occur, particularly in the first few weeks. Asymmetry or contour irregularity may occasionally require revision.

Less commonly, infection or changes in sensitivity may persist. These considerations will be discussed in detail during consultation to ensure informed decision-making and realistic expectations.
Labiaplasty Surgery Aftercare & Recovery
Aftercare: Labiaplasty is performed as a day-case procedure, and you may return home shortly afterwards. Swelling, tenderness and bruising are common in the first 1–2 weeks. Simple analgesia is usually sufficient. Wearing supportive underwear and using a sanitary pad can help protect the area in early recovery.

Recovery: Most patients take around one week away from work, depending on occupational demands. Light daily activities can resume gradually, but strenuous exercise, cycling and activities that place pressure on the area should be avoided for approximately 4–6 weeks. Sexual intercourse should also be deferred for around 6 weeks to allow complete healing.

Wound Care: The area should be kept clean with gentle washing and careful drying. Dissolvable sutures are typically used and settle over several weeks. Scar maturation continues over time, with final results becoming clearer as swelling resolves.
What is labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure designed to reshape or reduce the size of the labia minora (inner vaginal lips). It is commonly performed to relieve physical discomfort caused by enlarged or asymmetrical labia, or to improve the overall appearance of the intimate area.

Why do people choose to have labiaplasty?

Patients choose labiaplasty for both medical and cosmetic reasons. Common concerns include irritation during exercise, discomfort when wearing tight clothing, pain during intimacy, or self-consciousness about the appearance of the labia.

How long does it take to recover from labiaplasty?

Most patients can return to light daily activities within 7–14 days. Swelling and tenderness usually improve within a few weeks, with full recovery expected after around 4–6 weeks, depending on individual healing.

Is labiaplasty painful?

Some mild discomfort, swelling, and bruising are normal after labiaplasty. However, this is usually manageable with prescribed pain relief and typically settles within the first few weeks of recovery.

Will there be visible scarring after labiaplasty?

Scarring is generally minimal following labiaplasty. Incisions are carefully placed along the natural contours of the labia, and dissolvable stitches are used to support discreet healing.

When can I return to exercise after labiaplasty?

Light activities can usually be resumed after two weeks. More strenuous exercise, including running, cycling, or gym workouts, should be avoided for around 4–6 weeks to allow proper healing.

Can labiaplasty affect sensitivity?

Temporary numbness or changes in sensitivity may occur during the healing process. In most cases, sensation returns as the tissue heals, and long-term changes are uncommon when performed by an experienced surgeon.

When can I have sexual intercourse after labiaplasty?

Sexual activity should be avoided for approximately 6 weeks following labiaplasty to prevent complications and ensure the surgical site heals fully.
